Chair, Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation

Senator Jim Whelan represents the 2nd Legislative District which includes parts of Atlantic County. He received a B.A. in English Education and a Masters of Education from Temple University. Senator Whelan has taught in the Atlantic City school system for the past 28 years. He served one term in the General Assembly and was then elected to the State Senate in 2007. Senator Whelan also served as an Atlantic City Councilman from 1982 to 1990, and as Mayor of the city from 1990 to 2001. In 2001, Senator Whelan served as president of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors. Senator Whelan chairs the Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee. He is also a member of the Education Committee, Health Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, and the State Government Committee
