
Democratic Assemblyman Gordon Johnson has represented the 37th legislative district since 2002. Johnson received his B.A. in Social Science/Criminal Justice from St. Thomas Aquinas College and his M.A. in Administration and Supervision from Seton Hall University. He was a police officer in Englewood for 24 years, attaining the rank of Patrol Sergeant. He is also a past President of the State P.B.A. Supervisory Officers Association—Local #216. Johnson served as Bergen County Undersheriff, 1999-2001; Sheriff, 2001-2002; and Undersheriff again, 2002-2005. He was also a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, serving in Operation Desert Storm in 1990. There he was responsible for two Convoy Support Centers in the Saudi Arabian Desert. Gordon Johnson has received the National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, NATO Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and others. In the Assembly, Gordon Johnson is Chair of the Law and Public Safety Committee and a member of the Budget Committee and Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee. He was the sponsor of legislation that established a state rental assistance program patterned after federal section 8 programs, a measure that provided for the coordination of state and county emergency response programs, and legislation that requires the New Jersey Firemen's Association to pay death benefits to members employed as law enforcement officers who die in terrorist attacks.
