Democrat Frederick Scalera, of Nutley, was first sworn into the New Jersey General Assembly on May 22, 2003, filling the unexpired term of Paul A. Sarlo. Mr. Scalera was elected to his first full term on November 4, 2003.

Born May 27, 1958, Mr. Scalera received his Associate of Science in fire code technology from Essex County College. He is the deputy fire chief of Nutley.

Mr. Scalera and his wife, Joann, have one son: Eric.

Mr. Scalera represents the 36th Legislative District, which includes the Bergen County municipalities of Carlstadt, East Rutherford, Garfield, Lyndhurst, Moonachie, North Arlington, Rutherford, Wallington and Wood-Ridge; the Essex County municipality of Nutley; and the Passaic County municipality of Passaic.
