Bonnie Watson Coleman, a Certified Public Manager, began her career as a field representative for the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights and quickly rose through the ranks to become chief of the Bureau of Housing and Public Accommodations. In 1974, she established the first Office of Civil Rights, Contract Compliance and Affirmative Action, in the New Jersey Department of Transportation and remained the director of that office for six years. In 1980, Watson Coleman joined the Department of Community Affairs, where she held a number of positions including Assistant Commissioner, responsible for Aging, Community Resources, Public Guardian and Women divisions. Ms. Watson Coleman began her first term in the New Jersey General Assembly on January 13, 1998, and has served as chairman of the Assembly Appropriations Committee and a member of the Assembly Budget Committee. In addition, Assemblywoman Watson Coleman made the historic transition of becoming the first African-American woman to lead a state party when she was elected as chairwoman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, on February 4, 2002. Assemblywoman Watson Coleman has made history again by becoming the first woman Majority Leader of the New Jersey General Assembly. She represents the 15th Legislative District in Mercer County
