Frank J. Vozos, M.D., FACS,
Executive Director
Monmouth Medical Center

Frank J. Vozos, M.D., FACS, first came to Monmouth Medical Center in 1975 to begin a five-year residency program in general surgery and he has been a dedicated member of the greater Long Branch community ever since - basing his entire professional career at MMC.  Throughout his surgical career, Dr. Vozos has devoted himself to his community, treating several hundred patients a year.  In the proud tradition of Monmouth Medical Center, this care was rendered regardless of a patient's ability to pay, as he provided charity care for hundreds of his neighbors who were without insurance.  Dr. Vozos, who has published numerous medical research papers and lectured at a variety of medical meetings, is a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery.  He also served as a member of the New Jersey State Trauma Committee.

In 1998, Dr. Vozos became only the second physician in New Jersey to take on a top hospital leadership role when he assumed the position of Executive Director of MMC.  Dr. Vozos, who had previously served as President of the hospital's 800-member medical and dental staff, is responsible for the daily operations of MMC, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and one of the State's largest community teaching hospitals.

Dr. Vozos has overseen a period of tremendous growth at MMC, both in terms of patient volume and services.  Since 1998, the hospital opened the Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center, The Center for Advanced Surgical Technologies, and The Eisenberg Family Center.  TomoTherapy, the region's most-advanced radiation therapy system through the Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology was introduced, drawing patients from throughout the Metropolitan region.  He has also overseen the dedication of the Leon Hess Cancer Center and the impressive expansion of the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center, strengthening MMC’s reputation as one of the nation's premier breast care centers.

During his tenure, MMC has earned the designation as a Children's Hospital for Monmouth and Ocean counties and as a Joint-Commission-designated-Primary Stroke Center.  MMC was the first hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties to introduce the da Vinci Surgical System, the first robotic system approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration for use in laparoscopic surgery. Additionally, the hospital dedicated the Cline-D'Onofrio Emergency Services Pavilion and the David S. Zocchi Brain Tumor Center.  MMC was also selected for the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leaders Award, a program designed to identify hospitals that have instilled a true culture of performance improvement across their organization.

As he enters his second decade as Executive Director, Dr. Vozos takes great pride in the impressive growth of MMC, as dramatic increases in patient volume, particularly in the areas of Same Day Surgery, Emergency Care and Obstetrics, have strengthened its position as the region's premiere healthcare institution.  He sees this as parallel to the growth and development of Long Branch - a city MMC has been an integral part of since 1887.

Dr. Vozos serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Red Cross, the Prevention First Jersey Shore Partnership, MONOC and HealthSouth and its Rehab Hospital in Tinton Falls.  He also serves on the Advisory Board of Monmouth University, the 180-Women's Center and the Special Events council for United Cerebral Palsy.  He is a member of the New Jersey Hospital Association, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Society of Surgeons, the Medical Society of New York and the Monmouth County Medical Society.  He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the South East Surgical Congress.

Among his recent recognitions, Dr. Vozos was honored by the Boy Scouts of America with their Joshua Huddy Distinguished Citizen Award, by the Red Bank YMCA with their 2008 Champions for Children Distinguished Citizen Service Award and by the Asbury Park Press and Monmouth Health & Life magazine as one of the 65 Most Influential People in Monmouth County. In the past, his community service awards have included the corporate honoree for the Red Cross Jersey Coast Chapter’s annual charity ball and the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Ronald McDonald House of Long Branch. He has twice chaired Monmouth County’s American Heart Walk — each time earning MMC top honors among area hospitals.  He has served as grand marshal of the Long Branch’s 55th Annual Columbus Day Parade and has been honored by the Greater Long Branch Chamber of Commerce with their Louis G. Libutti Community Service Award.

Over the years, Dr. Vozos has been active in local service organizations, such as the Rotary and Lion's Clubs and the Urban League.  He notes a strong allegiance with local police, fire departments and first aid squads.  He considers it a great source of pride to have been appointed as a “police surgeon” in recognition of his support of the law enforcement community during the 1990’s.
